Skin Win: Know Your Risk Factors
While anyone can develop melanoma, certain factors may increase your risk, including:
- History of sunburns or excessive sun exposure
- Fair skin, light eyes, and red or blond hair
- Family history of melanoma or personal history of skin cancer
- Presence of numerous moles or atypical moles (dysplastic nevi)
- Weakened immune system
Skin Sin: Downplaying Melanoma
Melanoma, a potentially deadly form of skin cancer, develops in the melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. While it’s less common than other types of skin cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma is more likely to spread to other parts of the body if not detected and treated early.
